Different habitat preferences in animals have been interpreted mostly as a result of different adaptive design of the species and/or as a result of interspecific competition. We propose an alternative view of evolution of habitat preferences. Our model is based on progressive stochastic acquisition of cognitive clues discriminating habitat features which correlate with expected fitness. We assume that acquisition of each cognitive clue allowing discrimination of ‘better’ and ‘worse’ habitats (according to the average fitness in each habitat) will constrain further evolution, because each further clue will discriminate habitats only within previously acquired preferences. Simple simulation model shows that if it is the case, even the species with equal habitat-related fitness differences will rapidly diversify in their habitat preferences. Therefore, similarly as in the evolution of other species-specific traits, the evolution of animal–habitat relationship may be strongly affected by stochastic events and historical contingency. We investigated the structure of interindividual variations in the diet of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) based on stomach contents data of 3776 charr captured in 69 lakes of the Canadian Shield (Québec, Canada); 29 of these contained allopatric brook charr populations, 24 contained brook charr and creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and 16 contained brook charr and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). In any given lake, some of the charr fed almost exclusively on benthic organisms (benthic specialists, i.e., mean percent weight of benthic prey >90%), others, almost exclusively on pelagic prey (pelagic specialists, i.e., mean percent weight of benthic prey <10%), and a lesser proportion were generalist feeders (i.e. mean percent weight of benthic prey between 10 and 90%). The proportion of benthic and pelagic specialists were respectively 41.3 and 18% in allopatric brook charr populations. These proportions fit remarkably well with those based on interindividual preferences in spatial distribution, identified through radio-telemetry in another study done in two lakes of the same area. The proportion of benthic specialists was related to competition for benthic organisms with creek chub and white sucker. The effect of white sucker on brook charr diet was more pronounced than that of creek chub: the proportion of benthic specialists among brook charr decreased from 41.3% in allopatry to 19.7% in sympatry with creek chub, and to 9.9% in sympatry with white sucker. Other response variables of brook charr populations also indicate that white sucker is a stronger competitor than creek chub in this system. Because sucker and chub were introduced in these lakes during the last century, phenotypic responses of brook charr to interspecific competition appear to be rapid. Furthermore, in addition to providing a strong field support to the current hypothesis that polymorphism is promoted by arelaxation of interspecific competition, our results also indicate that phenotypic response of brook charr (i.e. the proportion of each form in a given lake) is related to the intensity of this competition.  相似文献

In two distinct survey areas, offshore from the Farallon Islands and in the vicinity of Pioneer Canyon off central California, Diaphus theta was significantly more prone to infection by the parasitic copepod Cardiodectes medusaeus than Tarletonbeania crenularis. In addition, D. theta was more heavily parasitized in the Pioneer Canyon area than in the Farallon Islands area. A linear relationship was shown between loge-transformed otolith size and loge-transformed SL and between loge-transformed dry weight and loge-transformed SL for D. theta and T. crenularis in both survey areas. A test of slopes showed differences between the two survey areas for both species. Lower dry weights were observed for both D. theta and T. crenularis, in parasitized versus non-parasitized specimens in the Pioneer Canyon area. In the Farallon Islands area, however, no differences were observed. Larger otolith sizes were observed in parasitized D. theta versus non-parasitized specimens in the Pioneer Canyon area, while no differences were observed in the Farallon Islands area. In contrast, T. crenularis had larger otolith sizes in parasitized versus non-parasitized specimens in the Farallon Islands area, while no significant differences were observed in the Pioneer Canyon area. These findings provided evidence of geographic and interspecific variability in both the prevalence and the physiological effects of parasitism.  相似文献

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to determine genetic relationships amongP. mariana (black spruce),P. rubens (red spruce), andP. glauca (white spruce) and to assess the degree of polymorphism within populations from different provenances and among spruce hybrids. Eleven arbitrary decamer primers were used to amplify genomic DNAs extracted from embryogenic cultures and seedlings. Species-specific RAPD markers were identified.Picea mariana andP. rubens showed similar RAPD profiles confirming their close genetic relationship. Species-specific RAPD markers were identified and were useful in distinguishing white spruce from black and red spruces. RAPD differentiation between populations within each species was small. The level of polymorphism was much higher in spruce hybrid populations than in the pure species. Cytological analysis ofP. mariana ×P. rubens hybrids showed normal mitotic behaviour at prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. All the hybrids analyzed from different cross combinations were euploids.  相似文献

The influence of foraging by the ant, Lasius niger, on the population growth of two aphid species, Lachnus tropicalis and Myzocallis kuricola, on chestnut trees, Castanea crenata, was examined. The ant-tending effect was divergent depending on the aphid density per ant: it was positive when there were few aphids per ant, but negative when there were many aphids per ant. In addition, the density of one aphid species also influenced the ant-tending effect on the other aphid. Furthermore, the influences were asymmetrical: an increase in L. tropicalis density per ant reversed the ants effect on this species and on M. kuricola, while an increase in M. kuricola per ant did not significantly influence the ants effect on L. tropicalis. Thus, the ant seems to stabilize the L. tropicalis population density and keep this species from extinction, while the ants effect on M. kuricola depends on the density of L. tropicalis and may lead M. kuricola to extermination. This change in the ant-tending effect corresponds to the previously detected density-dependent change in predation activity of the ants on aphids. In contrast, the density-dependent change in the protection effect of the ants against natural enemies does not explain the results.  相似文献

The morphology and meiotic behaviour of pollen mother cells were studied in hybrids involvingLeymus multicaulis (2n = 28) ×Psathyrostachys huashanica (2n = 14),L. multicaulis ×P. juncea (2n = 14), andL. secalinus (2n = 28) ×L. multicaulis. Chromosome pairing was almost identical in theL. multicaulis ×P. huashanica, andL. multicaulis ×P. juncea hybrids, in which it averaged 7.30 univalents + 6.69 bivalents + 0.096 trivalents and 7.48 univalents + 6.75 bivalents, respectively. The meiotic pairing in the two hybrids indicated that oneL. multicaulis genome was closely homologous with theP. huashanica andP. juncea genomes. BothP. huashanica andP. juncea are possibly donors of oneL. multicaulis genome. Chromosome pairing in theL. secalinus ×L. multicaulis hybrid averaged 4.49 univalents + 11.71 bivalents + 0.02 trivalents, indicating that the genomes ofL. multicaulis andL. secalinus are to some degree homologous. However, they are sufficiently differentiated to insure species distinctness.  相似文献

Closely related species of gall-forming aphids are often associated with a single host species. SixTetraneura species coexist on the Japanese elm,Ulmus davidiana, in Sapporo, northern Japan. This paper describes the probabilities of coexistence on macro- and microgeographic scales (i.e., on host trees and host leaves) and examines whether coexistence with conspecific or heterospecific galls on leaves or shoots has any effect on the fecundity of each aphid species using multiple regression. A Monte Carlo simulation showed that the frequency distribution of the numbers of species on individual host trees differed significantly from that expected from the null model. There were significantly positive or negative associations between species.Tetraneura radicicola andsorini always coexisted with other species on trees they infested. Multiple regression revealed that the coexistence of conspecific or heterospecific galls on individual leaves had no influence on the fecundity ofradicicola andsorini, but had a negative influence on that of sp. O. On average,radicicola andsorini produced a smaller number of offspring in galls than sp. O, and obviously consumed only a small part of resources available on the galled leaves. Evidence available suggests that although amensalism does arise between sp. O and other species, its influence in not so strong as to exclude sp. Mixed populations of the twospotted spider mite (TSM),Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and the Banks grass mite (BGM),Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), occur on corn and sorghum plants in late summer in the Great Plains. Interspecific matings between these arrhenotokous species occur readily in the laboratory but yield no female offspring. The effect of interspecific mating on female: male sex ratios was measured by examining the F1 progeny of females that mated with both heterospecific and conspecific males in no-choice situations. TSM females that mated first with BGM males and then with TSM males produced a smaller percentage of female offspring than TSM females that mated only with TSM males (43.1±5.8 and 78.9±2.8% females, respectively). Similarly, BGM females mated with heterospecific males and then with conspecific males produced fewer female offspring than females mated only with BGM males (55.7±5.2 and 77.5±2.5%, respectively). Lower female: male sex ratios were produced also by BGM females that mated with TSM males after first mating with conspecifics (62.4±3.4%). In mixed populations containing males of both species, females also produced lower female: male sex ratios, but these ratios were not as low as expected based on mating propensities and progeny sex ratios observed in no-choice tests. These data suggest that interspecific mating may substantially reduce female fitness in both mite species by reducing the output of female offspring, but in mixed populations this effect is mitigated by unidentified behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献
